Te Ahikaaroa O Toku Ngakau Tumai Stripped of Licence After Violent Offences
In a shocking turn of events, Te Ahikaaroa O Toku Ngakau Tumai has had his NZ security licence cancelled immediately after multiple assaults on police and a bar patron, raising serious questions about safety in New Zealand’s security industry.
Te Ahikaaroa O Toku Ngakau Tumai, a certified security guard, has been banned from working in New Zealand’s security industry following a string of violent offences. The decision, issued by the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA) on 29 January 2026, comes after Mr Tumai was convicted in December 2025 on two charges of assaulting police and resisting police — crimes automatically disqualifying him from holding a certificate of approval (COA) under section 62(f)(vii) of the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010.
Less than two weeks after these convictions, Mr Tumai allegedly punched a bar patron with a closed fist, leaving the victim unconscious. He has been charged with assault with intent to injure and injuring with intent to injure, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest after failing to appear in court.
Mr Tumai did not attend the PSPLA hearing, nor did he respond to the Police complaint or request a waiver. The Authority concluded that, given the seriousness of his violent behaviour and repeated offences, he is no longer suitable to act as a responsible security employee.
As a result:
- Mr Tumai’s certificate of approval was cancelled immediately.
- He must return his Security ID to the PSPLA within seven days, with failure to comply potentially resulting in further legal penalties.
This case serves as a stark warning to all security personnel in New Zealand: violent behaviour, especially against police or the public, will result in immediate disqualification and licence cancellation. The PSPLA continues to enforce strict standards to ensure that only responsible and trustworthy individuals protect people and property. https://www.justice.govt.nz/assets/Documents/Decisions/2026-NZPSPLA-005.pdf
